Possibilities of Open Learning

The classroom environment offers a limited space for students to truly develop and garner inspiration. The classroom setting is an alien entity that is not reflected in society beyond the school system. As school systems are becoming more eclectic in their course offerings, attempting to emulate more accurate workplace environments, these spaces are still limited by the classroom. which offers limited space, and room for cosmetic changes that do not facilitate classes to be taught most effectively.

examples of learning environments (we can post photos here)

The classroom reenforces negative feelings and ruins the teacher student dynamic. With an open learning environment teachers and students are able to interact harmoniously, by relying on the environment as a principal teaching tool. Open environments facilitate mobility, and encourage important life skills such as time management and agenda setting.

Many of these spaces depicted are already available, though limited for public access, and relegated for recreational space and use, not for instruction or learning. These places are comfortable, but are not recognized for their potential as educational delivery spaces.

“Airport Model”

To ensure that the space is never overcrowded, we will use a scheduling method similar to public spaces which already facilitate high traffic. This will allow for students to come, when they are ready to come, giving them a wide variety of options to authentically choose when they want to learn, and what specifically they want to learn. Each learning space would be staffed with likeminded teachers who form teams which are encouraged to grow and bond authentically, and develop personalized lessons derived from direct experience as opposed to arbitrary curriculum expectations.

Student flexibility also frees up teachers as well. Giving them also time to teach during times that work best for them. Flexible hours, allowing teachers to fully commit to the time that is allotted to them.

Fingerprinting

From these lessons that are focused and small. Teaching direct and specific skills instead of wide coverage and exposure, Teachers can return to their primary function of lesson development. These lessons will be highly personal, and transferable, allowing for newer teachers, entering the profession, to rely and further develop these lessons. These lessons will be attributed to their original authors, and owned by Aptal. This acknowledges and credits the original teacher’s efforts, and allowing for newer teachers to refer and connect with them to better understand the teachers original intention, and how the lesson suits the learning style of their students, and also ensures that these can be publicly accessed.

We are encouraging teachers to fully commit and cover subjects that they want to pursue, with an environment and expectation that teachers are developing lessons as authentically as possible.

Our Overall Goal:

Phase 1:

running a program in our environment, where certified teachers and students can meet in an open learning space. There will be no expectations on the teachers or the students, only to interact and share the space equally, allowing for students and teachers to feel comfortable with each other and the space they share. This 4 week program will allow for teachers and students to address learning gaps, and help students in areas that are, and are not directly covered during the K-12 curriculum expectations.
